"If a person's basic state of mind is serene and calm, then it is possible for this inner peace to
overwhelm a painful physical experience. On the other hand, if someone is suffering from
depression, anxiety, or any form of emotional distress, then even if he or she happens to be
enjoying physical comforts, he will not really be able to experience the
happiness that these could bring."
- Dalai Lama
Benefits of Meditation:
The benefits of meditation are remarkable, numerous and profound, but, it requires dedication and
perseverance to realize them. Do not be mistaken by expecting all of the benefits  of meditation in the
first few attempts; the mind takes time to tame. Also, it is sometimes hard to explain the benefits of
meditation, because it involves a state of consciousness that cannot be expressed by words. To
appreciate the benefits of meditation it is essential to learn how to meditate, experiment with different
meditation techniques and experience it for yourself. You can’t just read about it.
Man has built enormous modern cities, landed on the moon and split the atom, but are we able to
conquer our own mind? How often do you find yourself the victim of your own negative thoughts? Many
people believe that it is impossible to control their thoughts. However, the art of meditation teaches that
not only is it possible to control our thoughts, but, we can learn to slow them down and witness every
one of them. Through meditation we can bring our unruly mind under control. This creates peace of
mind and enables us to achieve greater things than we had ever thought possible.
Meditation is the best way to learn how to control our thoughts. Meditation involves the art of
concentration and quieting the mind. When we meditate we not only try to control our thoughts, but we
also can bring to the surface our inner qualities of peace and love; our own Spirit. The mind is a
wonderful gift and it is endowed with remarkable creative abilities; it is in a constant creative state.
Unfortunately, most people are on autopilot and the creative process is unintentional and negativity is
often the result. When we invoke the calming power of our own Spirit, it is then we can tap into the force
that heals the negativity of the mind.
Clear Path
Works
Meditation calms the mind and focuses the
awareness.  It brings about positive emotion as
it expands our perception.  The majority of
people have their awareness clouded by
negative emotions and incessant thoughts.
Meditation enables the light (Spirit) that is
constantly shining within our minds, to be better
perceived by ourselves, as well as allowing
others to better recognize it in you.  This occurs
because the negative thoughts and emotions
(otherwise known as "the cloud") diminish as
they are recognized and released.  Another way
to look at this “Cloud Example” is in the
traditional Buddhist analogy of the “normal” state
of mind being likened to muddy water that is too
clouded for any light to pass through.  Meditation
allows the “mud” to settle so the mind can
become clear and bright.
"Health, a light body, freedom from cravings, a glowing skin, sonorous voice, fragrance of body:
these signs indicate progress in the practice of meditation. "
- Shvetashvatara Upanishad
Stress Relief:
Physiological Benefits of Meditation:
Meditation lowers your oxygen consumption and decreases the respiratory rate. It increases
blood flow, slows the heart rate; all bringing about a deeper level of relaxation.
People suffering from depression often have lower levels of serotonin. Meditation increases
serotonin production and as a result influences a more positive mood.
Neuro-scientists have found that meditators actually shift their brain activity to a different area of
the cortex: brain waves in the “stress-prone” right frontal cortex move to the “calmer” left frontal
cortex.  This mental shift decreases the negative effects of stress, mild depression and anxiety.
Meditation can enhance the immune system and reduce stress dramatically.
While the positive physical effects that meditation
has on the body are remarkable, perhaps the
most important benefit of meditation is that it
increases awareness.  As awareness
increases, thoughts are much easier to
recognize and when recognized they can be
directed in positive ways. This is particularly
useful when painful thoughts arise, as they often
do.  When you are aware of painful thoughts, it is
possible to discard them in a very healthy
manner.  The majority of painful thoughts, once
recognized, can be seen as silly or illogical.  At
that point they are gently transcended and the
mind will be open to being healed.  Start
